Senior Manager, Finance,
“It has really given me the opportunity to branch out and try new things.”
Karsten joined the Finance Team in 2019 in Jumio's office in Palo Alto as Sr. Financial Analyst. Since Karsten has done this interview, he progressed in his role and is now working as Senior Manager, Finance.
Q: What do you do at Jumio and what does that involve?

A: I’m a Sr. Financial Analyst and I work with various departments (primarily Sales and Marketing) to forecast and manage their budget. My role primarily involves working with my business partners to manage and forecast expenses in order to meet the needs of the overall business while maintaining fiscal discipline. Additionally, I work on ad-hoc financial analysis related to headcount management as well as full P&L forecasting.

Q: What was Jumio’s selling point for you – What made you say “I wanna work there!”?

A: I had been at big companies prior to Jumio, so working for a technology start-up was a big draw. I wanted to try something different, where I could make an impact every single day.

Q: What are the most fun bits of the role?

A: The fun part about my role is that I get to start from scratch (a blank slate) on varied projects where there has been no real process in place. I sometimes get told “this is what I need, go figure it out”.

Q: What do most people get wrong about the role?

A: Some might misunderstand my role that it is more Accounting focused. In reality, my role is very strategic, forward thinking and business partner oriented.

Q: What’s the secret to being good at your job?

A: Being detail-oriented is a given, but I get to step back and look at the “big picture”. I need to work closely with executives to determine what they are really thinking, anticipate what they are asking… and most importantly, be prepared to come up with a plan so everything fits together.

Q: What challenges did you face and what did you learn from that?

A: Nothing was really centralized when it comes to retrieving information – I have learned to be resourceful and figure certain things out on my own.

Q: How have you been able to progress your career or learn new things at Jumio?

A: I have taken on more leadership responsibilities – building out processes, volunteering to take on new projects, etc.

It has really given me the opportunity to branch out and try new things.

Q: What would you say to potential employees wanting to work at Jumio? What qualities should they have?

A: The ability to see the big picture and work in an environment of ambiguity. The desire, passion and tenacity to work along co-workers, business partners to strategize and come up with a plan, for whatever that may be.
